Book Review – The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership – John C. Maxwell

Book review

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You
By John C. Maxwell
Another great book to help me improve and develop my leadership skills. John C. Maxwell is well credited with his ability to define leadership and apply it. I listened to this audio version and I always enjoy when the author is the one who reads the book they wrote. It feels more authentic and like a real lecture hall.

It is hard to grasp learning The 21 Laws of Leadership but to be really effective it is a necessity. In his book he defines the laws with a thorough description and a real life example to demonstrate the law. This I found helpful as we all know most ideas can be interpreted differently by different people. Maxwell gives straight forward approach to each of the laws which I enjoyed. No trying to decipher the meaning and why it’s important, he gives it to you straight.

The 21 Laws of Leadership
Maxwell has been a leader and helping other leaders develop (a true sign of a leader) for decades and although this book written back in 2001 it is still instrumental for leaders and has been updated to relate with more with current climate and the changing times. For me even going through an academic masters’ program working on the psychology of leadership, learning and knowing the skills still can be tricky to incorporate and learn. This book is a useful resource for leaders to work on their development and improvement.

It is hard to develop them all at once so for me I have taken a law a week to dive into and really get a sense of how I want to represent that law. Not going in order I pick one that might be related to an area that is currently going on. After reading this create a plan that works for you to really learn and develop these laws into your leadership development.
Overall I think this a great read for those in leadership positions and for those who are developing into their leadership potential. As all leaders know you have to have continuous improvement if you want to be effective at being a leader. This book is a solid find and one I will continue to go back to when I need to. I highly respect John C. Maxwell and his desire to help others become not just leaders but effective and successful leaders. I highly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did whether you read or listen to it on your morning commute!
